Essential Tips for International Runners and Trail Enthusiasts
The Chicamocha Canyon Race has established itself as one of the most demanding and spectacular trail running events in Colombia. Nestled in the heart of the majestic Chicamocha Canyon (the second largest in the world!), it attracts international runners every year seeking an authentic, technical, and cultural challenge.
Personal Note: This race is particularly close to my heart as it is organized by my in-laws. It is an event born from their passion for their land, and we go above and beyond to ensure every runner enjoys an extraordinary human and sporting experience.
If you are participating in a Colombian trail race for the first time, here are the expert tips from Natalia, the Race Director, to help you prepare effectively.
1. Master the Canyon’s Climate and Terrain
The biggest challenge for European or North American runners is the tropical climate. Conditions here are worlds apart from the Alps or the Rockies:
- Temperatures: They can soar above 30°C (86°F) by mid-morning.
- Exposure: The sun is intense with very little shade along the route.
- Terrain: Technical trails featuring sharp rocks, dust, and steep inclines.
Expert Tip: Specifically train for heat and prioritize sessions with significant vertical gain ().
2. Physical Preparation for Colombian Trails
Running in Chicamocha requires endurance, but above all, great muscular strength. It’s not just about speed; it’s about effort management:
- Master the climbs: They are long and often highly technical.
- Protect your quads: Prolonged descents on loose rock are taxing on the joints.
- Efficient hiking: On certain sections of the Canyon, running is impossible. Power hiking is a core part of the strategy.
3. Recommended Gear for the Chicamocha Canyon Race
The right equipment is crucial for your comfort and safety:
- Trail Shoes: Opt for shoes with excellent grip for rocky and dusty surfaces.
- Sun Protection: A hat or visor and long-lasting, high-SPF sunscreen.
- Hydration: A hydration pack is mandatory.
- Clothing: Breathable, ultra-fast-drying fabrics.
Golden Rule: Never wear new shoes or clothes on race day. Test all your gear beforehand to avoid blisters and chafing.
4. Hydration and Nutrition: The Deciding Factor
Heat drastically increases the risk of dehydration and cramping.
- Electrolytes: Start consuming them from the very beginning of the race.
- Consistency: Sip small amounts constantly; don’t wait until you are thirsty.
- Anticipation: Refill your reservoirs at every aid station.
Did you know? Paradoxically, the highest rates of dehydration occur during rainy years. Without the direct sensation of heat, runners often forget to drink. Don’t fall into this trap!
5. Logistics and Regulations: Plan Your Trip
A stress-free journey is the key to a good race. Carefully check the official CCR website for:
- Medical certificates and proof of experience (mandatory for ultra-distances).
- The liability waiver form to be signed.
- Mandatory gear lists specific to each distance.
6. Traveling to Colombia: Adventure Beyond the Finish Line
The Chicamocha Canyon Race is a magnificent gateway to discovering Colombia. As a Travel Planner, I recommend:
- Arrival: Plan to arrive in Colombia 3 to 4 days before the race, and at least 2 days early in San Gil to acclimate.
- Stay: Bib collection starts on Friday, and the awards ceremony for all distances is on Monday. Don’t leave early—stay to enjoy the atmosphere!
- Tourism: San Gil is the adventure capital of Colombia (rafting, paragliding, caving). Make the most of it!
Need a tailor-made itinerary? You can extend your stay (15 to 21 days) to discover the Coffee Region, Caribbean beaches, or Cartagena. My partner Tripico and I are here to organize your sports trip from A to Z.
7. Live the Experience to the Fullest
Running here is about immersing yourself in Colombian culture and hospitality. Take the time to connect with other runners, taste the local gastronomy (try the hormigas culonas if you’re brave enough!), and admire the breathtaking landscapes.
The Chicamocha Canyon Race is an unforgettable challenge.
With the right preparation and rigorous logistical planning, your first trail experience in Colombia will be as demanding as it is rewarding.
